Trees Of Alumni Tradition

Kingswood College, formerly known as Box Hill Grammar School and New College, continues to honour all its past students since 1890 through the Trees of Alumni Tradition.

Our Tradition

Each year, a new plaque is revealed to the graduating class on their final day of Year 12, placed adjacent to the century prior, creating a tangible link to the generations of students before them.

Using our magnificent grounds and heritage-listed trees, this unique tradition serves as a reminder of the contribution and legacy of each graduating class in the School's history.

Designed to continue in perpetuity, the Trees Of Alumni is a living reminder of the deep-rooted connection between past, present and future students of Kingswood College.

Trees of Alumni Map

"What you gained from Kingswood and what you gave to Kingswood is still here, I believe, though it has been passed across years, and through generations, and it has changed. As you look at the trees today, the temptation is always to look at their size. Their colour, their character. And they are beautiful...

Trees of Alumni Celebration

But as you walk around our lovely grounds, and pause to read the plaques, let your eyes slide a little lower. Remember – there’s more than twice as much going on under your feet. The Trees of Alumni together in generations of students, they are near the generation before and the generation after – and the science tells us those trees, when you stand and walk beside them, know their neighbour trees, and their neighbour trees, and their neighbour trees...

Trees of Alumni Celebration

They are a community, just like we are a community. There is something majestic about them – and it’s not because of their wings, their height or their span, the particular gloss of their leaves – and if I may be so bold; there is something majestic about us – our continuity, our connection, our shared foundation."

Trees of Alumni Celebration

At Kingswood College we proudly work to fulfil our vision to embolden hearts and inspire minds in a nurturing environment, on land that holds deep cultural significance to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We acknowledge and honour their Elders, past and present, and extend our respect to all First Nations people. Whenever we gather, and wherever we gather, we extend respect and dignity to the first inhabitants of our country and acknowledge the truth about the country on which our school has stood and now stands.
